Singing is music making in its most primeval form. The first musical instrument to be exploited by humankind was its very own voice: an instrument possessed by all, affording the most direct, immediate and organic access to music. The Gewandhaus Choir and Gewandhaus Children’s Choir are a guarantee for this unadulterated gateway to the world of music.

Gewandhaus Choir

Throughout its history, the Gewandhaus Choir has been intimately associated with the Gewandhausorchester, yet boasts its own proud heritage spanning over 150 years. The Choir has performed with many of the world's most celebrated conductors, most frequently, of course, with the incumbent Thomaskantor and Gewandhauskapellmeister of the day – in recent years Herbert Blomstedt, Riccardo Chailly and Andris Nelsons. Since the 2007/08 season, the musical direction of the Choir has been in the hands of Gregor Meyer.

Gewandhaus Youth Choir

The Gewandhaus Youth Choir can already look back with pride on its first exciting decade of music making. Founded on the initiative of former members of the Gewandhaus Children's Choir, it forms a valuable link between the children’s ensemble and the predominantly adult Gewandhaus Choir. Initially numbering eight members, the Choir has developed into an ensemble comprising approximately 40 young singers ranging in age from 14 to 25. The musical direction lies in the hands of Frank-Steffen Elster, Director of the Children’s Choir, thus ensuring a compelling continuation of the young adults’ vocal development.

Gewandhaus Children´s Choir

Founded in 1973, the Gewandhaus Children's Choir has, as a consequence of its high musical demands und persistent nurturing of young talent, established itself as one of the most renowned and successful children's choirs in Germany. From 1982 to 1997, the Choir was led by the influential hand of Ekkehard Schreiber. Frank-Steffen Elster succeeded Schreiber in 1999, directing the Choir to this day.

Preparatory Choir

In the Gewandhaus Preparatory Choir children of five to nine years of age are able to gain initial experience of performing on stage. They perform in the Children's Choir’s Advent concerts and at the Gewandhaus Open Day. The children receive vocal training and instruction in music theory in preparation for the musical demands of the Children's Choir, to which they will hopefully wish to graduate. The Preparatory Choir is directed by Guido Mattausch.
