There are many good reasons for devoting a focus to Bohemia's music in the programme of the Gewandhausorchester. Since the 16th century, the exchange with Bohemian musicians has shaped the Saxon music culture, and the construction of instruments in the Saxon-Bohemian »Musikwinkel« is still internationally recognized. Last but not least, musical personalities from Bohemia have repeatedly played an important role in the history of the Gewandhausorchester.
During the focus Alan Gilbert will conduct a Bohemian repertoire including a pure Dvořák programme with the famous cello concerto and Smetana's large-scale orchestral cycle »My Fatherland«. Beyond these Große Concerte, the focus also extends through numerous chamber music programmes in the season 2018/19.
