Singing is music making in its most primeval form. The first musical instrument to be exploited by humankind was its very own voice: an instrument possessed by all, affording the most direct, immediate and organic access to music. The Gewandhaus Choir and Gewandhaus Children’s Choir are a guarantee for this unadulterated gateway to the world of music.
The active participation of around 150 singers of all ages in the Gewandhaus’s artistic programme contributes substantially to the dynamic and spirited anchoring of the Gewandhaus culture in the city of Leipzig. The choirs bridge the gap between amateur and professional music making with both passion and consummate artistry. With the innovative projects constantly conceived by the Choir Directors, Gregor Meyer and Frank-Steffen Elster, coupled with the astonishing quality of performance, the Gewandhaus choirs’ concerts become true voyages of discovery.
The choirs’ activities extend to all aspects of the Gewandhaus’s programme: you can experience them performing alongside the Gewandhausorchester, together with the Gewandhaus organ, in staged dramatic productions, during the festive seasons or simply a cappella. Variety is very much the spice of the Gewandhaus choirs’ season; consistent remains the excellence of the singing.
